What works (and what doesn’t)
✓ Block ice (works)
Block ice lasts 50% longer than cubed ice of the same weight. Buy block ice at gas stations or freeze your own in milk cartons.
✓ Pre-chill the cooler (works)
Put the cooler in a cold garage overnight, or fill with ice 1 hour before packing and dump. Starting cold means less melt from your fresh ice.
✗ Salt (doesn’t work — makes it worse)
The “add salt to make it colder” myth is misleading. Salt lowers the freezing point, making the ice melt faster. The salt water is colder initially but runs off and stops cooling.
✓ Quality cooler (works — biggest factor)
A Yeti or RTIC cooler retains ice 2-3x longer than a cheap Coleman of the same size. The insulation makes a huge difference for multi-day trips.
✓ Keep cooler in shade (works)
Direct sun adds 30-40°F to the cooler’s surface. A cooler in shade stays 20-30% cooler. Use a beach shelter or place under a tree.
