How to Pack for a 3-Day Trip in a Carry-On (The Compression Packing Cube Method)

I’ve been using the same compression packing cube setup for 3 years and 40+ trips. Here’s exactly what’s in my carry-on for any 3-day trip, and how I fit it all in under 30 liters.

The system

4 packing cubes + 1 small electronics pouch. That’s it. Total weight: under 8 lbs packed.

Cube 1: Tops (large)

  • 3 t-shirts (rolled, not folded)
  • 1 long-sleeve shirt
  • 1 light sweater

Rolling vs folding saves about 30% space. Compression zippers on quality cubes (like RAS compression cubes) squeeze another 20%.

Cube 2: Bottoms (medium)

  • 1 pair of pants (worn on the plane to save space)
  • 1 pair of shorts
  • 1 pair of swim trunks (if beach destination)

Cube 3: Underwear & socks (small)

  • 3 pairs of underwear
  • 3 pairs of socks

Cube 4: Toiletries (small, mesh-top)

  • Toothbrush + travel toothpaste
  • Deodorant (solid, not liquid)
  • Travel shampoo (under 3.4 oz / 100ml)
  • Razor + 1 cartridge
  • Any medications

Pouch: Electronics (small)

  • Phone charger
  • Laptop charger (or USB-C multiport)
  • Power bank (under 100Wh for carry-on)
  • Headphones
  • Travel adapter (if international)

Worn items (don’t pack these)

Wear the bulkiest items to save space:

  • Jacket or hoodie (even in summer, planes get cold)
  • Pants (1 pair)
  • Sneakers (1 pair)
  • Watch

What’s NOT in my bag

  • Hair dryer — every hotel has one
  • Books — Kindle or phone
  • Full-size shampoo — buy at destination if needed
  • Multiple shoes — wear 1 pair, pack flip-flops if beach
  • Jewelry — minimize what you bring on trips

Compression cube vs regular packing cube

Regular packing cubes: keep things organized, no compression.

Compression packing cubes: have a second zipper that flattens the cube, removing air. Saves ~20-30% more space.

The catch: compression can wrinkle clothes more (you’re squishing them flat). For business trips, use regular cubes. For vacation/ casual trips, compression is great.

Why I prefer this over a checked bag

  • No baggage fees — save $30-60 per flight each way
  • No waiting at carousel — walk off the plane and go
  • No lost luggage — airline loses 1 in 100 bags
  • Faster security — fewer items to scan
  • Forces you to pack light — which is the whole point

The full kit I use

Total investment: ~$120 for the system, lasts 5+ years.

Happy packing. Email sales@hkras.com if you have questions about our packing cubes.
